Children Available

Children from around age 1 to 16 years of age, with most children being toddler and older. Siblings and the adoption of unrelated children is possible. Ethnicity - African, dark skin, hair and eyes. A request for a specific gender is possible.

Adoptive Parent Criteria

Marriage Requirements: Married, heterosexual couples or single women are accepted.

Age Requirements: Adoptive parents must be between the ages of 25 and 55 and at least 21 years older than the child they want to adopt. A relative of the child need only be twenty-one years old.

Income Requirements: None
Religion Requirements: None

Travel Requirements

Sierra Leone Adoptions2-3 trips are required. The initial trip will be to meet your child and will be about 5-7 days in country. Only one parent must travel for the first trip. After the first trip is a mandatory fostering or guardianship period of six months. The second trip takes place around 6-8 months after the first trip and will be the court hearing. Both parents required for court hearing. The second trip lasts about 7-10 days. The issuing of the child's visa may take several months and therefore families may have to make a third trip which is a short 2-3 day trip to pick the child up.

Time Frame

The Sierra Leone adoption program is a pilot program. The time frames can be unpredictable. Estimated time from dossier submission to picking up your child is 10-24 months.

Post Adoption Requirements

The Sierra Leone adoption process is final in country. Your child will travel on an IR 3 visa back to the USA. Post placement visits and reports are required at 1 month and 6 months after placement.
